So, what’s the best time to visit Mérida? For the best weather, visit in the cooler months, from November to March.
If you’re visiting in any other month, you can still have an amazing trip.
The key to visiting in the slow season, from April to October, is to be prepared.

What’s the best time to visit Merida Mexico?
For the best weather, visit Mérida from November to March.
The one exception is if you’re planning to attend the Hanal Pixán festival (the Mayan Day of the Dead) from late October to early November.
It will still be a bit hot, but the festival is worth it.
What’s the worst time to visit Merida Mexico?
I have lived in Merida, on and off, since 2019, and I always tell people to avoid May to September entirely!
May is the hottest month in Mérida, and even locals dread it.

Mérida is HOT, and it’s not unusual for afternoons to reach 100°F (37.8°C) in late spring and summer.

Merida Wet Season and Merida Dry Season
Mérida’s rainy season runs from about May to October, and the dry season from about November to April.
Of course, it can rain at any time of year, and there are plenty of sunny days in the rainy season.
The good news is that storms tend to pass quickly.
In summer, it often rains for an hour or two in the afternoon. If you’ll be outdoors, carry a reliable travel umbrella, ☔️ like this one.

When is the rainy season in Mérida?
Mérida’s rainy season runs from about May or June to October.
September is usually the wettest month, with about 7 inches (183 mm) of rain. Most storms are short afternoon downpours, so mornings are often sunny.
Atlantic Hurricane Season in Mexico
The last thing to keep in mind is hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
With the Gulf of Mexico to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the east, Mérida can get intense thunderstorms, tropical storms and even hurricanes.

January is a great month for a Mérida trip, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors.
It’s one of the coolest months of the year. If you’re visiting the beaches near Mérida or the Mayan ruins near Mérida, expect warm, sunny days.
There are many great things to do in Mérida itself, but January is also a great month for day trips from Mérida.
The easiest way to visit all the amazing places in the Yucatán is to pick up a Mérida rental car at the airport when you arrive.

For me, February has the best weather in Mérida.
It’s not just the weather, either. Winter is great in general, but February is when the holiday crowds start to thin out.
If you’re visiting the big sites in Yucatán, like Chichén Itzá, on a day trip from Mérida, expect great weather and smaller crowds.
Hotel prices also drop a bit after January, so you can splurge on a gorgeous hotel like Hotel Hacienda Mérida VIP.

March feels like the last month of “perfect” weather in Mérida.
By the end of the month, the heat and humidity start to return. March is still a great month to visit, but the earlier, the better.
Even in late March, you can cool off at the beaches near Mérida, 30 to 90 minutes from the city.
There are also many amazing cenotes near Mérida, swimmable sinkholes filled with cool, fresh water.

April can be hit or miss. It can still be quite nice, or it can already feel hot and humid.
May is the hottest month in Mérida, and April is often the warm-up.
The good news is that April usually isn’t rainy yet.
That makes it a good time for outdoor activities and day trips, like a Mérida to Campeche day trip.
Campeche City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site about two hours away.

No one can predict the weather perfectly, but one thing is certain: May is the hottest month in Mérida 🥵
Even locals dread May. Many avoid being outside in the afternoon, unless it’s to swim in the cenotes near Mérida.
This time of year, it’s worth paying a little extra for a Mérida Airbnb or Mérida hotel with a pool.
A pool is great for the hottest afternoons, or for a dip at night after a long day of sightseeing.
Even if you’re used to warm weather in the U.S., Mérida is much closer to the Equator, so it’s hotter.

May is Mérida’s hottest month, but June isn’t much different. Summers in the Yucatán are rough in general.
Every place has a few “bad” months, and summers in Mérida are hot, humid and buggy, so don’t forget your bug spray!
Unlike Tulum or Cancún, Mérida is about 22 miles (35 km) from the nearest beach, Puerto Progreso, so you won’t get a sea breeze.
To do what the locals do, plan indoor activities for the afternoons, when it’s hottest.
June is also the start of hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
Mérida rarely takes a direct hit (the last major one was Hurricane Isidore in 2002), but it does get tropical storms and heavy rain.

July is another hot and humid month.
Mérida won’t really cool off until late October, but you can plan your visit to stay comfortable.

If you’re reading month by month, you might be wondering, Is the weather in Mérida ever nice?! Yes, it is, but not in summer.
August is still one of the hottest, most humid months in Mérida, which makes it one of the worst times to visit.
Remember, you can always do as the locals do. Plan indoor activities, like visiting these Mérida museums, for the afternoons to avoid the midday sun.

September is usually the rainiest month of the year in Mérida.
The rain often lasts only about an hour in the afternoon, but carry your travel umbrella just in case.
Plan indoor activities for the afternoons, when it tends to rain, and you should be fine.
For a beach day, head to the beaches near Mérida early in the day to get the most sun.
The great thing about September is that it isn’t high season yet, so hotel prices are still low.

Finally, some good news! Mérida starts to cool off in October, especially late in the month.
It’s a fun time to visit, because it’s when Mérida celebrates Hanal Pixán (pronounced ha-NAHL pee-SHAHN), the Mayan Day of the Dead.
If you want to see Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mérida, book early, like one of these Mérida Airbnbs or best Mérida hotels.
The celebrations run from October 31 to November 2.
The highlight is the Paseo de las Ánimas (Parade of Souls; see above), usually held on one of the last evenings of October.
Even if you aren’t coming for Hanal Pixán, October is a great month to visit.
By late October, the rain, heat and mosquitoes start to let up. It’s also right before high season, so you may find good hotel deals.
Merida Weather in November

The weather in Mérida really starts getting great in November.
It’s still technically hurricane season until November 30, but heavy rain is rare. It’s usually sunny and pleasant, though a shower is always possible.

December and January are the coolest months of the year in Mérida.
December is also one of the busiest months for tourism, but after Mérida’s hot summer, the crowds are worth it for the cooler weather.
With holiday lights all over the city, December is a pretty time to be in Mérida.

The best time to visit Mérida is from November to March, when the temperatures are cooler and the humidity is lower.
